The Lawrence House Centre for the Arts is proud to be able to bring this extraordinary celebration of our rich history of Sarnia Lambton to our community. The journey has been an experience unlike any other for all of us that have been involved in this project; the staff, volunteers and community participants have all expressed how much this has enriched and touched their lives The “Crude mentary Tales” has been three years in the planning, writing, community outreach and production. Along the way, through the community involvement, collecting local stories and creating new partnerships, the Lawrence House has won many accolades for its involvement with Artwalk, Canada Day and Santa Claus Parades (winning 1st prize in both the Santa Claus and Canada Day parades!). All of these activities have resulted in facilitating the education of new skills to our community that fulfills our mandate of    providing venues for exhibition, creation, performance and the development of art and artists.

The LHCA continues to apply the artistic vision of engaging the public, artists and partners in a ways that inspire new avenues of creation, both in our programming and our community outreach. The Centre demonstrates a capacity to bring varied groups together and provides diversity in arts programming for all ages.  In addition to our children & youth programming we offer workshops in drawing, painting, new media MAC programming, printmaking, digital photography & music classes for adults.

The Lawrence House Centre for the Arts has invited Barry Prophet, a composer, percussionist, instrument maker, sculptor, poet and playwright, to exhibit the integrated & media arts installation Dwellings & Incursions: Natural Selection & Community and be Artist in Residence for two weeks during the exhibition from Aug. 7- Aug. 22, 2009.
Barry Prophet has been teaching traditional and experimental percussion for over twenty years and is the director of the Music Gallery Institute, the educational wing of the Music Gallery,
Toronto. He has exhibited and performed at the Ontario Science Centre, Science North, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Art Gallery of Windsor, Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Royal Ontario Museum.
The LHCA considers Mr. Prophets' artist residency and installation to be important as a relevant social experience for the community and will promote the mission of advocating the sustainability of youth culture in our creative city. This contributes significantly towards a public understanding of how community involvement with the arts compliments and enriches civic pride, culminating in a broader understanding on how the arts can be capitalized as an economic driver for our changing community. It is through events of this calibre that is an affirmation of the urban renewal in the downtown area that continues to see new businesses investing in the Arts and Culture District of
Sarnia.

An enthusiastic group of Lawrence House volunteers spent long days designing and constructing a parade float for the Canada Day parade which featured a very large thunderbird. Nearly four meters wide and three meters tall, the thunderbird was designed by local artist Moses Lunham whose 2008 show at the Lawrence House  was very successful.

The float won the 'Best Non-commercial Entry' award in the parade and was accompanied on the street by stiltwalkers, flag wavers and many people in costumes. These costumes and the thunderbird will be featured later this summer in "Crudementary: Tales from Black Creek to Bluewater", a processional play to be held in Canatara Park. A production of the Lawrence House and Toronto's Shadowland Theatre, tickets are currently available at the LHCA.
